School Lunches: Show Compassion (by Charlie N.)

Do any of your friends buy lunch from the cafeteria? If your friends do, don’t tease them because there lunch looks different from yours. People have been complaining to Room Representatives because they don’t like the school lunch. In Student Council, we’ve noticed that sometimes kids buy lunch, and then throw it away because they think it looks bad. If you actually try the food, it may taste pretty good. Do you know how much pressure is on the guy who prepares the food?

Recycling Bin Concerns and Respect for the Green Team (by Kahmel J. and Hugh T.)

Do you want to go green? Lately we have been finding items in the recycling bins that shouldn’t be there, like food, Mylar, and beverages. Green Team monitors find these objects, and some see this happen after telling people that you shouldn’t do this. We have also been having issues with respect for the people who volunteer and give up their recess to show you what to recycle and help you recycle, too. I have had some experiences with people being rude to us when we were volunteering. People have asked why we’re wasting our time and have been putting in soiled trash in the bins.

"Bee" Aware of Bee Hive Concerns (by Nico P. and Eli S.)

Handball is a fun and enjoyable activity to play on the yard, but recently playing hasn’t been as much fun as it used to be. The A and B handball courts have been closed off with caution tape, due to the fact that two trees off to the side of the courts are infested with beehives. As we try to rid the school of this situation, Student Council has reminded you how to stay safe by putting up fliers and writing articles about the situation while the bees are around. As a result of the numerous amounts of bees, there is a good chance of you getting stung.

Matching Day (by Nicky S., Charlie N., and Nico P.)

Matching day was definitely a success with an overwhelming amount of identical students. Several people were interviewed and we asked them about their opinions on Matching Day. Sebastian G. mentioned that he liked Matching Day because he could dress up with whomever he wanted and however he wanted. Nina S. liked the idea that you could dress up with your class so nobody could be left out. Nicole K. liked Matching Day better than Twin Day because nobody could felt left out because you could match in groups.

Reflections on Being a Student Council Representative

Not only does Student Council have an effect on your life but it has an effect on the school. Right when I walk through the door of room twelve (Where Student Council takes place) we get straight to work. The committee chairs write the agenda on the board.  When the words "You may meet with your committees," comes out of our mouths, all of the talking starts at once. Everybody delivers news, reads assignments, or gives new updates. It is a loud but great atmosphere.

Student Council's Mission Statement 2012 (by Emily K.)

Through rough and smooth, we will stay as a whole.
Never more or less, no matter what will uncoil.
Through our committees and our trust,
We will thrust our school's great ideas and musts.
Special days, and so much more,
Are in our palms, stronger than ever before.
Though our differences may set us apart,
Everyone will keep a place in our hearts.
Go green and succeed, or write and unite.
With the help of our teachers Thyer and D'Arceaux,
No liar will stand without a "No."

Litter in L.A: Westwood Charter's Service Learning Project (by Lily S.)

The Student Council Service Learning Committee (Dean P., Ryan S., Lily S., and Leah S.) polled the students of Westwood Charter to see what service learning project we would like to do as a school. Students voted on a local project, which will be litter prevention in Los Angeles.

School Spirit and How We Show It (by Hugh T.)

Our school has many great things about it, and one is that we show our school spirit and give our all in everything we do. Many people love school spirit days! It is extremely fun to run around wearing our school colors and to use our energy to show our spirit. We interviewed some people as well, and asked them how they feel about school spirit days. Livy from room B6 said, "I think that School Color Day is a really fun and exciting day, and I hope that we could do it again." Ryan from room 1 said, "I really enjoyed wearing my school colors.

Are you ready to show your school spirit? Then Special Days are your thing! Special Days are important because we show school spirit by wearing school colors, showing creativity, and having fun! School spirit is a way to show thanks and appreciation to teachers, administrators, parents, and even students, and it brings us all together! Below are the Special Days for 2012.

Student Council Representatives will announce the Special Days to each classroom, and remember that participation is optional, but we hope that you'll join in the fun!
