Reflections on Being a Student Council Representative

Not only does Student Council have an effect on your life but it has an effect on the school. Right when I walk through the door of room twelve (Where Student Council takes place) we get straight to work. The committee chairs write the agenda on the board.  When the words "You may meet with your committees," comes out of our mouths, all of the talking starts at once. Everybody delivers news, reads assignments, or gives new updates. It is a loud but great atmosphere.

Room representing is also very important to our school. We deliver news about our school and remind classes of upcoming school events. It takes a lot of effort to prepare the speech. You have to practice a lot, but it is all worth it when somebody listens to your speech and enjoys it. Student Council is a great experience. - By Ariella M.

In my opinion, Student Council meetings are very busy. There are committees that are discussing their jobs as Student Council members, and although it's noisy, I know that it's about work. As a part of the Westwood Window/Blog committee, we start off by talking about the articles that we have submitted, and then get information about articles that we have to work on. We also distribute who will do what, and it's very energetic. Next, my opinion on how it feels to be a room representative is that it's really cool being able to let people know about what it's like in Student Council. I feel like I am the voice of Student Council (for my room rep class, however), and I get to report what's going on during Student Council. It's also great when the students give good feedback and suggestions, and they usually have lots of interesting questions as well. Overall, being part of Student Council is something I always look forward to! -By Hannah Y.

Student Council meetings are fun and interesting.  We go over our homework, usually room representatives, and then get into our committees.  Either Ms. D'Arceaux or Mrs. Thyer comes to our committee and tells us what our assignment is for the meeting.  We then carry out the assignments.  We meet up as a whole council at the end of the meeting and discuss what we will report to our room rep. class.  This is what it is like to report to my room rep class: I feel like I'm in charge when I walk into my room rep. class.  I discuss everything that is going on in Student Council.  Then I talk about general things going on in the school.  Then I ask for questions.  Student Council is a very good experience.  - By Noah

Student Council meetings are kind of noisy, but that just proves that we're working hard and trying to get stuff done.  Towards the start of the meeting, everybody is huddled up while the chairs are making the announcements.  Then, everybody breaks out into groups and it is all spread out.  People are all spread out around the classroom, some typing, some writing, and some working and drawing on posters.  Everyone is working really hard and getting a lot of hard work done.  The different committees do different tasks during the meetings, but in the long run we are still one big group of kids who want to work together to improve the school.

Being a Room Rep is a dream come true to many Student Council members.  Just the feeling of standing in front of the classroom and you get that leadership feeling in your gut where you just want to explode.  Being a Room Rep is very exciting and fun.  It feels good when all the kids ask you questions that you can answer and inform them about what is going on.  It is really exciting and fun when you announce an important event coming up, like a special day or a new activity, and they cheer really loud.  Being a Room Rep is truly an enticing and fun job. - By Nicky S.

A Student Council meeting can be led by kids or teachers. At 2:30, we get together to discuss room rep announcements.  The Chair of each committee tells what they're doing and we write it down. We tell what we wrote at our room rep class. Before we discuss about room reps, we get in our committees and talk about if we are going to write an article soon or put up a new poll, etc. We sometimes start writing the article or somebody comes checking of your room rep signatures. Student Council meetings are fun but serious. Student Council is not for goofballs. So don't come in there and start cracking jokes.    - By Charlie N.

Today I'm going to talk about student council. I am going to explain how it feels and how it looks like to be in student council and perform a room rep. In a student council meeting we start out with the agenda, that's when we write down what we are going to do in that student council meeting. Then we have attendance, and then we get checked if we did our room rep we were supposed to do. After that we break up into our committees. We discuss things and do projects in our committee. When we are finished with the student council meeting, we write down what we are going to tell the class that we are representing. After we are done with that, we are dismissed.

Now I am going to talk about being a student council room representative. It is not the easiest thing in the whole world. In the student council meetings you have to write fast to get everything down for your class, such as all the news, information and other stuff. Being a room rep is pretty fun, it is fun because you get to tell the classes what's going on and you get to run room to room telling your class what is going on in the school. Sometimes you get a little nervous. You're in the center of attention in your room rep class and it can make you a bit nervous, scared and you will feel a tiny bit embarrassed. You get used to it after a while and it gets easier and easier. Eventually it becomes really fun and you like seeing your class every time. - By Kahmel J. & Hugh T.

Normally, when you walk through the door to room 12,in the end of school, you can feel the maturity in t air. After we all settle down, we go to the table our committee is at. The schedule is read, and we all get started on helping, fixing, and improving the school. Inside the “huddle” of the committees, the kids discuss the things they can make better, or add to Westwood.
We also have room reps. When it is our time to report, we walk to the class and talk about what the committees are up to like; the next special day, or the new things at school. It is really fun and interesting to look at the faces watching you talk. It’s always a blast! -By Eli S.

Being a Room Rep puts a big responsibility on your shoulders. Every Room Rep is assigned a classroom. The Room Reps ensure that they report to their classroom about the important affairs that are discussed in Student Council. If none of the Room Reps informed the members of our school about the school community, then no one would no what’s going on in our academy! Fellow teachers and students depend on Room Reps to keep them updated. Being a Room Rep might seem like hard work, but once you get into the habit, it seems really simple. If you ever be a Room Rep, you will find the job delightful. Overall, Room Reps should do their jobs nicely and efficiently.

One Student Council meeting contains many accomplishments. Every week, all the Student Council members assemble together and brainstorm ideas on how to make our school a better place. For example, the Service Learning Committee concluded to collect trash around the school and try to reduce California Littering. They thought our school could get involved with the whole state. Also, the Window/Blog Committee writes articles for the Westwood Window every two weeks, reporting all the student’s voices. The pupil’s voices are heard through writing which are published on the Window. The Poll/Website Committee also takes votes to see what the majority of students like. An upcoming poll is going to be based on the “Play first, and eat second,” rule. They are going to see if people like to play first or eat first. Then, maybe we can change the rule. Another committee, Events/Publicity tries to make enticing special days and events. They publicize all the important occasions (for example, the auction). Also, the Green Team is currently making rotations, which teach people about recycling. We discuss the complaints of the students, meet in our committees, jot down information, and let our school know about it. Student Council is consistently active. WE WILL SPEAK THE STUDENTS’ VOICES!!! - By Rivata D.

When your in student council it’s both a privilege and an honor. It is a privilege because it’s hard to go every Thursday and help the school. It requires an immense amount of planning. It’s an honor because you get to help the school with almost everything! In the student council meetings, you can be doing something you were supposed to be doing, and you immediately have to stop and do something else. Student council meetings are also crazy because you have to listen really hard! What I mean by that is that sometimes it will be really loud and a teacher come over to your committee. Then she will whisper to you while it is really loud. Some good things about student council meetings is that you get to meet new people. Also, you get to discuss what could very well be happening in the next month or so. Student council meetings are amazing!
When you are a room rep, you feel very important. You feel important because your almost the only way for them to get information. When you walk into the room you feel both proud and nervous. Your nervous because you are presenting information to a whole class of maybe 30 kids! Yet I still love doing it. Room representing is great! -Will R.
